Technology Management Alumnus Brings the New York Public Library Into the Cloud

Jay Haque, a 2013 graduate of the Technology Management program at the Columbia School of Professional Studies, has a new award to put on his mantel.

As the Director of DevOps & Enterprise Computing at the New York Public Library, Haque and his team were recently honored with the 2016 City on a Cloud Innovation Challenge Best Practices award. This honor recognizes “innovative local government projects running on the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cloud that are making an impact.”

The New York Public Library was selected by a team of experts across the world due to factors such as the impacts of the solution, possibility of longterm success, use of the cloud, and the potential to use these models across communities. Haque’s work has taken a beloved institution and expanded its reach globally, as the New York Public Library debuted both a redesigned website and its splashy Digital Collections website, which gives any user with a web browser access to digitized research from the NYPL’s peerless collection.

In a recent post on Medium, Haque went into more detail about the New York Public Library’s cloud journey and how it developed, noting that the project was done with a small team, in a short amount of time, and it will reverberate throughout the years, as the work “will automate the infrastructure builds for a limitless number of sites.” As Haque notes, the New York Public Library’s cloud journey has provided a robust framework for making one of the world’s great research libraries accessible to the community.
